Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf (12 oz) whole-grain French bread
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 cup low-sodium marinara sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1.5 cups part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 oz turkey pepperoni
  • 1/2 cup bell peppers, sliced
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Slice the French bread in half lengthwise using a serrated knife, then cut each half into two or three manageable sections. Place them cut-side up on the baking sheet.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the extra virgin olive oil and minced garlic. Use a pastry brush to apply a light layer over the cut surface of the bread.
  4. Par-bake the bread for 5 minutes until the edges are golden and the surface is firm. This creates the moisture shield.
  5. Remove bread from the oven. Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce over each piece, then sprinkle with dried oregano and red pepper flakes.
  6. Distribute the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese evenly across the sections.
  7. Top with turkey pepperoni, bell peppers, and mushrooms.
  8. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 7 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and caramelized.
