Ingredients:
- 1 loaf (12 oz) whole-grain French bread
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 1 cup low-sodium marinara sauce
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1.5 cups part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 4 oz turkey pepperoni
- 1/2 cup bell peppers, sliced
- 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
- Slice the French bread in half lengthwise using a serrated knife, then cut each half into two or three manageable sections. Place them cut-side up on the baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, mix the extra virgin olive oil and minced garlic. Use a pastry brush to apply a light layer over the cut surface of the bread.
- Par-bake the bread for 5 minutes until the edges are golden and the surface is firm. This creates the moisture shield.
- Remove bread from the oven. Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce over each piece, then sprinkle with dried oregano and red pepper flakes.
- Distribute the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese evenly across the sections.
- Top with turkey pepperoni, bell peppers, and mushrooms.
- Return to the oven and bake for an additional 7 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and caramelized.
